Sleep and Death. From Hypnos and Thanatos to the Dormitio Mariae

The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria is confirmed as a creative laboratory for the production of culture, as well as for the conservation and enhancement of the Calabrian cultural heritage, in collaboration with the main institutions and cultural associations in the area. On Thursday, June 13th, the unmissable event is at 5.30 pm, in the Conference Room, with the International Writers’ Center of Calabria and with Professor Paola Radici Colace, Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Messina, Honorary President and Director of the Scientific Committee of the CIS. For the Cycle “Life, death and travel in classical mythology: literature, iconography and music”, the philologist will hold a conference with the support of video-projections, on the theme: “Sleep and death from Hypnos and Thanatos to Dormitio Mariae”.

Speakers: the director of the Museum, Carmelo Malacrino, and the president of the CIS of Calabria, Loreley Rosita Borruto.

In the Iliad, Homer calls Sleep and Death the “two quick twins”. Therefore, they are two intimately united figures, both children of the Night and Darkness of the Underworld. A bond that remains indissoluble in all cultures and historical eras up to Christianity. The passing of the mother of Jesus, Mary, is described as a dormition.

The philologist Radici Colace will lead the public to discover this fascinating theme, in a historical-literary and interdisciplinary excursus.
