“The myth of myths: Scylla and Charybdis”, Conference of the historian Pasquale Amato

Another one of our magnificent Summer Nights at the MArRC is preparing, with a wonderful journey of knowledge between mythology and history in one of the most magical and fascinating places on the planet Earth: the terrace on the Strait under the Stars, in the company of Pasquale Amato, professor at the University for Foreigners “Dante Alighieri” of Reggio Calabria and head of the Global History Cycle in the Scientific Committee of the International Center for Writers from Calabria.

Amato will hold the conference on “Myth of the myths: Scilla and Charybdis”, on Thursday, July 26th, at 9.00 pm.

They will introduce: the director Carmelo Malacrino and the president of CIS, Loreley Rosita Borruto.

The event is part of the “… rEstate at the MArRC!” program and in the calendar of initiatives for the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage.

“The Strait of Scilla and Cariddi Area, that is geographically in the center of the Mediterranean, has given rise to the densest concentration of myths that have fueled the collective imagination of the West since pre-Homeric times”, Amato says. “The rich and varied scenery of the Strait has subjugated artists and inspired poets during all the centuries. Other myths have been joined to the main one of Scylla and Charybdis in different periods – the historian continues -. However, in the collective unconscious of the populations of the Strait, the first mythological scene has resisted as one of those deep underground threads that constitute the ‘long-lasting waves’ of history in the suggestive thesis of Fernand Braudel».

The CIS is a partner of the MArRC for the enhancement of the Calabrian cultural heritage in the context of strengthening the common European identity.

A famous ice cream shop in Reggio Calabria will offer a sweet refreshments. Knowledge tastes well at the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria!
